Glitter Rock's King of Sole
FRED SLATTEN

The retro vein in vogue during the glitter-rocking 1970s revealed a desire by the fashionistas to present themselves stylewise as more mature and experienced, moving beyond flower-child flounce and flow to 1940s-era tailoring with twists of Technicolor glamour in make-up and accessories in order to continue the command of attention.

And for those who truly wanted to tower over the rest of the "moving stars" in their circle, there was no radical fashion statement quite like the elevated works of art created in the form of designer Fred Slatten's platform shoes.

Fred Slatten's store at 8803 Santa Monica Boulevard became a Mecca for the wealthy, the style-setters, and the trendy. People with high level fashion consciousness such as Cher, Elton John, Bette Midler, Nancy Sinatra, Middle Eastern princesses, and the "moving stars" of Sunset Boulevard flocked to Fred to get their hands on his artwork for feet. And the taller the platform, the glitzier the glitter, the more outrageous the design, the better.

Info on the mysterious Mr. Slatten is sadly lacking, but below are the links I was able to find, and thanks to my Rodney's English Disco Girl of a sister and a few other sources, I was able to obtain photos of some vintage and contemporary examples of Fred Slatten's artistry!

Fans of Fred may feel free to contact the Fred Slatten Facebook page or Fred Slatten Shoes MySpace page if they have any further updated information, photos of them with The Shoes, or recollections of their fanfolk experiences walking on the wild side wearing Fred Slatten!
